‘A Second Chance: How Team Australia can succeed in Asia'

From 2019 to 2021 I was privileged to co-lead the national Asia Taskforce of senior leaders from the business, education and government sectors to examine how Australian companies and organisations can increase their presence and position in Asia to ensure our continued prosperity and deliver progress for future generations.

The Asia Taskforce was chaired by Mark van Dyck, Managing Director (Asia-Pacific), Compass Group. It was co-led by Jennifer Westacott, CEO of the Business Council of Australia, Andrew Parker, Asia Practice Leader and Partner at PwC and myself as a CEO of Asia Society Australia.

The taskforce examined how Australia can build and enhance its position with the powerhouse Asian economies in our proximity, diversify our economic partners, and prepare for a more strategically and economically competitive region.

The Taskforce released its final report A Second Chance on 7 April 2021, and eight discussion papers on specific sectors and countries throughout 2020 and 2021.

The Taskforce believes that implementation of these actions will considerably enhance Australia’s chances of success in Asia:

  1. Adopt a “Team Australia” approach

  2. Play to our strengths

  3. Learn to navigate a more complex China

  4. Reboot Asia literacy

  5. Champion our rich Asia talent

The Asia Taskforce makes 24 recommendations for business, academia and government which, if implemented, will improve Australia's competitive position in the region.

Read our final report and explore the key insights and policy papers on the Taskforce website.
